Thomas Habinek is Professor of Classics at the University of Southern California.  He has published widely on topics concerning Latin literature, Roman culture, and the history of classical rhetoric.  More recently, he has begun to consider the applicability of recent developments in natural science to the understanding of ancient cultures.  His published work in this vein includes "Ancient Art versus Modern Aesthetics: A Naturalist Perspective," Arethusa 43 (2010) 215-230 and "Tentacular Mind: Stoicism, Neuroscience, and the Configurations of Physical Reality," in Bridging the Gap Between Neuroscience and the Humanities: A Field Guide to a New Meta-Field, ed. B. Stafford.  (Chicago 2011) 64-83.  He is currently at work on a book-length study of the afterlife of Stoic physics in European art and philosophy (joint with art historian Hector Reyes) and on a book on distributed personhood in ancient Rome.
